Recipe for sangria
Sangria can do it all! It is both fruity, sweet, dry, full-bodied, smooth, refreshing, and boozy.
I am absolutely crazy about sangria, and to me, it simply tastes like summer. Even though it is Spanish, I have drunk so much of it at home that Danish summer unequivocally calls for sangria – and it has to be as traditional as possible: That means made with red wine. I can also agree to adding sparkling water because it makes it a bit more refreshing on a hot summer day.
Strawberries, elderflowers, white wine, etc. – they just don’t really belong in sangria if you ask me!
Every time I have sangria, I am immediately taken back to Madrid in the summer of 2015. It was the first time I visited Spain, and if sangria + tapas were a song, it would be the theme tune of that summer!
Sangria tastes different in Madrid than it does here at home. Since then, I have tried to recreate the flavor. I was unsure for a long time whether it really was about the ratio of ingredients or if it was purely psychological. But honestly, I think I’ve nailed it now! It’s perfectly sweet, refreshing, and boozy! 😉

Sangria
Equipment
- Deciliter Measure
- Knife
- Cutting Board
- Glass jug
Ingredients
- 1 pcs. Lemon
- 1 pcs. Orange
- 1 pcs. Peaches
- 1 pcs. Apples
- 0.5 dl Brandy
- 2 dl Orange Juice freshly squeezed
- 0.5 dl Sugar
- 1 pcs. Cinnamon Stick
- 750 ml Red Wine preferably Spanish!
- Ice Cubes
- Sparkling Water optional
Instructions
- Slice the orange and lemon into rounds and then halve the slices.
- Place half the orange slices and half the lemon slices into a glass pitcher. Set the remaining slices aside.
- Cut the peach and half an apple into smaller pieces.
- Add all the peach pieces to the pitcher but only half of the apple pieces. Set the remaining half apple aside. Optionally, squeeze a little lemon juice on the cut surface to prevent browning if it will be a while before serving.
- Pour the brandy into the pitcher along with the orange juice and sugar.
- Use a large spoon (preferably wooden) to press and mix the contents of the pitcher, releasing the fruit juices. Mix everything well.
- Now add the cinnamon stick and red wine (I personally prefer Rioja!). I usually place the pitcher in the refrigerator for about 2 hours so the flavors can really develop, but you don't have to if you can't wait.
- Just before serving, stir the pitcher and add ice cubes to each glass.
- Cut the remaining half apple into smaller pieces and distribute them into the glasses.
- Pour the sangria into the glasses and optionally add a splash of sparkling water.
- Garnish each glass with an orange slice and a lemon slice.
