Recipe for world’s best chocolate buns
Is there really anything better than freshly baked warm chocolate buns on a somewhat gray autumn day? Or actually on any given day? I don’t think so! This recipe is the best I’ve made so far for chocolate buns; they turn out exactly the way I want them: buttery-soft and airy, filled with small gooey chocolate bombs and a twist of cardamom. They taste faaaantastic! And they only get even better with a bit of butter and a cup of coffee or cocoa.
As a bonus, they are easy to make, and just go ahead and bake a good big batch because they can easily be frozen and warmed up as needed – then they will taste like freshly baked.

World's best chocolate buns
Ingredients
- 200 gram Buttermilk
- 100 gram Water warm
- 35 gram Yeast
- 40 gram Sugar
- 3 pcs. Egg 2 in the dough + 1 for brushing
- 450 gram Wheat Flour + 25 g for kneading
- 100 gram Rye Flour
- 2 gram Cardamom ground
- 4 gram Vanilla Sugar
- 3 gram Salt
- 50 gram Butter soft
- 100 gram Dark chocolate coarsely chopped
Instructions
- Mix milk and water together. Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm mixture.
- Mix in the sugar and the 2 eggs.
- Add flour, mix well, and pour the dough out onto a floured surface, where you continue kneading it by hand.
- Cut the butter into small cubes and knead it into the dough along with the chopped chocolate. Knead by hand until the butter and chocolate are evenly distributed and the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Let the dough rise at room temperature for an hour.
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit) (fan-forced).
- Divide the dough into 15 pieces, shape them into buns, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let the buns rise for another 15 minutes.
- Beat the remaining egg and brush the buns with it. Bake the buns for 15 minutes in the preheated oven and serve them warm.
