Recipe for homemade tartar sauce
This delicious tartar sauce is a great accompaniment to fried seafood, shrimp, fish, and fish ‘n’ chips.
The recipe is simple and easy to make.
The sauce is cold and can be used for many things, but deep-fried fish fillet, fish ‘n’ chips, or as a cold sauce for a barbecue night hits the spot.
It is somewhat reminiscent of remoulade in its consistency and I must admit that for many years, I did not like it. Probably mostly because it contains gherkins, which I couldn’t stand. Today, I love the sauce, which I use often.

Homemade Tartar Sauce
Ingredients
- 190 gram Mayonnaise Homemade or Miracle Whip
- 45 gram Sour Cream
- 2.5 gram Dijon Mustard
- 27 gram Capers chopped
- 45 gram Cornichons chopped
- 0.5 pcs. Shallots finely chopped, use a regular onion if you don’t have shallot
- 3 gram Chives finely chopped
- 4 gram Parsley finely chopped
- Spices Salt and pepper
- Lemon Juice
Instructions
- I usually make my own mayonnaise. I find that store-bought versions are typically a bit too sweet. I typically use this immersion blender mayonnaise recipe, but without cayenne pepper. Since there is mustard in my mayo, I don’t add mustard to my tartar sauce.
- Mix mayonnaise and crème fraîche together in a bowl. Add mustard.
- Finely chop all ingredients and add them to the mixture.
- Season with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.
