Recipe for mashed potatoes
My Version of the Perfect Mashed Potatoes!
The most important trick to successfully making your mashed potatoes is not to add salt to the boiling water. The salt will make the potatoes sticky, resulting in a sticky mash instead of a light and fluffy one.
You can also benefit from warming up the milk before adding it to the mash – see tip in the note.

Ingredients
- 1.5 kg Potato choose a variety suitable for mashing
- 75 gram Butter
- 100 gram Milk or boiling water from the potatoes
- Spices salt and pepper
- Nutmeg optional
Instructions
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into smaller pieces. Put them in a pot and pour water in until it covers the potatoes. Do not add salt to the water! Boil the potatoes until they are completely tender. This takes about 20 minutes. Drain the water from the potatoes and add butter in small pieces. Mash the potatoes with your preferred tool – for example, a hand mixer – and add milk or the boiling water from the potatoes until the mash has a suitable consistency. Season the mash with salt, pepper, and optionally grated nutmeg.
Notes
Consider using white pepper in the mashed potatoes. The taste is the same, but some prefer not to see the small black pepper grains.
