Recipe for margarita

Recipe for the simple yet always delicious margarita.

We have the recipe (not the image) from the book: “Gin – vodka – tequila – 150 new and classic cocktails“, from which the author Brian Lucas says the following about the drink:

“It is believed that the first Margarita was mixed in the 1940s (although some believe the 1930s), and it remains one of the most popular cocktails in the USA today – especially among those made, served, and consumed at home.

The origin of the Margarita is a much-debated topic among cocktail enthusiasts.

One of the more widespread stories is about Margarita Samas, one of the most colorful figures from the social scene in Dallas. Margarita hosted some fantastic parties and loved serving exotic alcoholic concoctions she had created herself. When she offered her mixtures to those brave enough to try them, she asked them first to guess the ingredients and then to judge the taste. At Christmas in 1948, Margarita held a poolside party at her holiday home in Acapulco (on Mexico’s Pacific coast) for friends and family from Texas. It was during this party that she concocted a mix of tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. Her guests were thrilled, and the mixture soon became the favored party drink in the southern USA, quickly spreading (from Acapulco) through Texas to Hollywood. Naturally, it was named Margarita.

According to another account, it was the Spaniard Enrique Bastante Gutiérrez, who was the world champion in cocktail mixing in the 1940s, who first mixed the drink – it is said that he made it especially for the movie diva Rita Hayworth. There is also the tale of Marjorie King, a showgirl who was allegedly allergic to all forms of alcohol except tequila. While visiting Rancho Del Gloria Bar at Rosarita Beach in Mexico in 1938, she asked for a mixed drink instead of a regular shot. Bartender Danny Herrera poured tequila over shaved ice and added lime and triple sec. He translated Marjorie’s name into Spanish and thus created the Margarita.”
