Recipe for long island iced tea
The infamous and classic Long Island Iced Tea – the drink with many different types of alcohol.
We give you the recipe and the story behind the drink here.
We have the recipe (not the picture) from the book: “Gin – vodka – tequila – 150 new and classic cocktails“, from which the author Brian Lucas says the following about the drink:
“Long Island Iced Tea – a charming name and a fearsome reputation. As the name suggests, the drink was invented on Long Island in New York, probably during Prohibition, when bartenders mixed all sorts of bootleg liquor and colored it with cola to create a cocktail that looked like an innocent iced tea.
Today, the word ‘tea’ is used as a general term for all mixed long drinks that contain at least two types of clear spirits and are served in a highball filled with ice.
This is an all-time popular classic. Beware of two things: Firstly, make sure you get what you pay for. This cocktail should be opaque and light brown in color. If it looks too dark brown, there’s too much cola in it and therefore, of course, less alcohol.
Secondly, the combination of five different spirits means that Long Island Iced Tea is a really strong cocktail that, however, goes down easily – if you drink it too quickly (or drink too many) you are guaranteed a severe hangover.
In moderate amounts, however, this cocktail can be a fine start to an entertaining evening.”
