Recipe for grandmother’s mouse nuts
This recipe for delicious, small square cookies is one of my best childhood memories. My grandmother is from southern Germany and often baked these delightful cookies with a slightly tangy lemon aftertaste for me. They were always placed in the bowl in the picture, which I inherited when she passed away.
Why they are called “mussenødder” I do not know, and I haven’t tasted them since sometime in the ’90s. I was sure I would never taste them again, but when my mom found this recipe among some old papers, my wife and I quickly baked them and filled the bowl once more.

Ingredients
- 300 gram Wheat Flour
- 4 gram Hartshorn
- 175 gram Margarine
- 125 gram Sugar
- 1 pcs. Egg
- 1 pcs. Lemon Zest From one whole and unsprayed lemon
Instructions
- Margarine and sugar are whipped together.
- Add the egg and whisk it into the mixture.
- Finally, add the hartshorn salt and then the flour.
- Let the dough chill for a few hours.
- Roll the dough out very thin (about 2-3 mm).
- Cut small squares of about 1.5 x 1.5 cm with a knife (it's a lot of work).
