Chop red onion and garlic and sauté them in a pan until they turn brown.
Add the remaining ingredients.
Heat the sauce up to the boiling point, then let it simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
After 30 minutes, you can choose to blend the sauce or thicken it with cornstarch to the desired consistency. I prefer to keep some texture, so I do not blend my sauce, but I often thicken it so it sticks better to spareribs or in a burger. If the sauce is blended, it often works better as a dip. Enjoy!
