Recipe for twist bread

Twisted Bread. Few things evoke the height of summer as much as the combination of spicy campfire smoke and fresh twisted bread dough.

Twisted bread dough is one of the simplest things to mix together, and it warms the hearts of most children and the young at heart. When we hear the word ‘twisted bread’, many of us associate it with sun, summer, warmth, and playful fun at after-school centers—along with large, smoke-filled fire pits. However, twisted bread doesn’t always require setting up a large fire pit surrounded by heat-resistant stones.

This weekend we lit a medium-sized fire bowl in the middle of the lawn, and then it was all about summery family coziness and a festive atmosphere under the open sky and the baking sun.

Ingredients

  • 25 gram Butter
  • 250 gram Whole Milk
  • 7 gram Dry Yeast Or half a pack of yeast
  • 8.4 gram Sugar
  • 6 gram Salt
  • 400 gram Wheat Flour

Instructions

  • Find a pot.
  • Melt the butter.
  • Pour the whole milk into the butter.
  • Find a bowl and pour the mixture into it.
  • Stir yeast into the mixture.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and mix well - but hold back a bit of the flour.
  • Get your hands in and knead the dough together!
  • Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel.
  • Place the bowl in a warm spot.
  • Let the dough rise for about an hour.
  • Sprinkle flour on the table.
  • Pour the now risen dough onto the table.
  • Knead the dough thoroughly.
  • Add the remaining flour if the dough is too sticky.
  • Now divide the dough into six pieces.
  • Roll each piece into long, thin sausages about the length of an underarm.
  • Place the dough sausages on a plate or dish and take it out to the fireplace.
  • Now find your sticks - we used bamboo sticks and a single twist bread stick borrowed from the neighbor’s wife, who is an avid outdoorswoman. The twist bread stick consists of a wooden handle with a metal end around which the twist bread is wrapped. Baking definitely went faster with the twist bread stick.
  • Make sure to hold the stick at a right angle and not too close to the coals.
  • After about 10 minutes, the twist breads are fully baked and ready to eat.
  • Pull the sticks out of the breads. Be careful not to burn your fingers.
  • For example, dip the twist breads in ketchup or dip.

Notes

If you happen to have leftover dough, you can easily press it flat and grill it a couple of minutes on each side - then you'll have a delicious flatbread.
