Recipe for taramosalata – creamy greek roe dip

A smooth, airy, and flavorful Greek dip made from salted or smoked cod roe, bread, olive oil, and lemon. Taramosalata is a staple of Greek mezze, perfect with fresh bread, vegetables, or as part of a festive spread.

Taramosalata is a fixture of Greek mezze tables, celebrated for its silky texture and bright, briny flavor. Traditionally enjoyed during Lent and festive gatherings, it pairs beautifully with bread, vegetables, and seafood.

The Flavor and Texture

The dip’s distinctive character comes from the combination of salty, smoky roe, the creaminess of soaked bread, fruity olive oil, and the brightness of lemon. When blended correctly, it becomes light and airy with a delicate balance of saltiness and acidity.

Variations and Regional Twists

While cod roe is the most common base, some regions use carp roe. The choice of oil can also vary, with some blending olive oil and neutral oils to mellow the flavor.

Serving Traditions

Often served in a communal bowl, taramosalata invites sharing. In Greece, it’s especially popular alongside other mezze staples like skordalia, tzatziki, and melitzanosalata.

Why You’ll Love It

If you enjoy dips that are both rich and refreshing, taramosalata delivers. It’s quick to prepare, visually striking, and deeply rooted in Greek culinary heritage.
