Recipe for chestnut old fashioned
“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire… Jack Frost nipping at your nose…”
Can you feel it? The sweet Christmas season is slowly approaching.
In English-speaking countries, chestnuts – or chestnuts – are among the most Christmassy things there are.
And this cocktail, Chestnut Old Fashioned, is specifically made to be sipped on cold winter evenings in front of the fireplace, and not least to the sound of all the good old classics by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Brenda Lee.
The “nutty” chestnut flavor gives a sublime, smoky depth and rounding to the robust bourbon, while the lime juice makes the cocktail perfectly balanced.
It is a genuine Christmas cocktail and a sure hit during the festive season.
What is an Old Fashioned?
The traditional Old Fashioned was developed during the 19th century.
It is made with bourbon, sugar syrup or a sugar cube, and Angostura bitters – served with ice and, of course, the obligatory orange peel for garnish.
What is bourbon?
Many are in doubt about the difference between bourbon and whiskey – and if there really is any difference.
Bourbon is whiskey. Simply put. It is an American-produced whiskey that got its name from Bourbon County, Kentucky (USA).
However, not all whiskey can be labeled as bourbon whiskey. Confused? So was I.
What makes a whiskey a bourbon whiskey is simply that it meets all of the following:
- It is produced in the USA.
- It is made from at least 51% corn.
- It is aged in new, American-made white oak barrels, which must also be charred on the inside.
The most popular brands of bourbon whiskey include Four Roses, Blanton’s, and of course the good old Jim Beam.
Chestnut Old Fashioned
Here is the recipe for, in my opinion, the perfect Chestnut Old Fashioned, as I make it at my restaurant.
Chestnut Old Fashioned
Ingredients
- 3 cl Bourbon Good quality
- 1 cl Liquor chestnut
- 1 cl Lime Juice
- Sparkling Water
- cherry amarena
Instructions
- Put ice cubes, bourbon, chestnut liqueur, and lime juice in a shaker.
- Shake for 20 seconds.
- Fill a lowball cocktail glass with ice cubes.
- Pour the contents from the shaker into the glass.
- Top off your Chestnut Old Fashioned with soda water and an amarena cherry.
- Serve.
