Lasagna is a dish that ranks very high on many families’ lists of favorite foods, and it is regularly served in many homes. Italian food is generally easily accessible, and this is also true for lasagna. This is one reason it has become so popular, and we have embraced it so thoroughly.

The original Italian lasagna can be quite difficult to track down because it is a dish that can be varied almost endlessly. Every chef has their recipe, and even that can be varied from time to time. Although lasagna is lasagna, it often gets a twist.

The Origin of Lasagna

The dish originally comes from Italy. The land of pasta. Lasagna can be varied in many ways, but the most well-known variant is made with meat sauce, namely lasagna bolognese.

As the name suggests, the meat sauce made of beef and tomatoes is believed to originate from Bologna in Italy.

What is Lasagna?

Lasagna is a form of “layer cake” that consists of layers of flat pasta sheets, meat sauce, and béchamel sauce, topped with a layer of cheese. The layers are placed in a dish and put in the oven until the pasta sheets have the right consistency.

It is the meat sauce that provides the great opportunity to vary the recipe. Some use the meat alone, most add various vegetables to the meat. The beef can be replaced with other types of meat or fish, or it can be completely omitted, making it a vegetarian lasagna.

The Many Possibilities for Variation

In a meat sauce inspired by the Bolognese, you can add chopped or grated vegetables such as onions, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, mushrooms, beetroot, parsnip, garlic, broccoli, peppers, chili, and so on. This makes the lasagna both healthier and varied in taste and texture.

Whether you use meat or fish or not, or whether you use canned peeled tomatoes or a complete package from Knorr, it is entirely up to the individual chef.

Likewise, there is free choice regarding whether you use layers of béchamel sauce in the dish or not. In other words, there is almost free choice on all shelves concerning the selection of ingredients in this new-classic.

Children and Lasagna

Some children are more picky than others, but most children prefer food that is easy to eat and not too spicy. In this regard, lasagna is brilliant. A piece of lasagna might seem like a simple dish, but there can be some hidden vegetables in it that the child otherwise does not like.

If you make sure to chop, grate, or blend the vegetables, you can manage to sneak quite a bit into this meat sauce without the child noticing. Smart.

Most children have lasagna as one of their favorite dishes. Therefore, it is served quite frequently in families. It is also a tasty and nutritious dish. Serve it preferably with salad or crunchy vegetables like cucumber or carrot sticks. Or a freshly baked Italian bread. It’s the best.
