The burger is a universal favorite. The bun with patty closely resembles a sandwich, which is why it is sometimes also referred to as a beef sandwich (or hamburger), but it stands out by retaining its round shape and often having a bit more “stuff” and deliciousness to it. That’s why everyone loves burgers. So whether you are just making a packed lunch for your kids or serving dinner to your guests, you can never go wrong with a good burger.
Read on in this article to learn more about this delicious dish that is sure to impress your family as well as guests.
What is a burger?
A burger typically consists of a soft bun with a patty of ground beef inside. Accompaniments often include pickles, tomatoes, ketchup, and a piece of crispy lettuce. The burger became popular in Denmark in the 1980s and has since been consumed frequently by Danes at fast-food restaurants and at home. Initially, however, it was the “Danish” version, the beef sandwich, that was most popular. Today, there are no limits to what a burger can contain.
Where does the burger originate from?
Unsurprisingly, the burger originates from the USA, where it is most often referred to as a hamburger. Hamburger is also the term used at Danish fast-food restaurants to denote a regular burger with a patty made of ground beef. Despite the word ham in hamburger, this has no connection to ham, which is the English translation of the word ham. Instead, there is broad agreement that the name originates from the German city of Hamburg.

What types of burgers are there?
Burgers are, as mentioned, very popular, and for the same reason, there are today countless different types of burgers. Here is just a short list of some of the different versions you can find around Danish restaurants and especially make yourself at home with the family:
- Hamburger: The classic burger with a patty, pickles, dressing, and ketchup. Served at fast-food restaurants such as McDonald’s and Burger King.
- Cheeseburger: The classic burger served with one or more layers of sliced cheese that melts over the hot patty.
- Bacon burgers: If you want a little extra of all the good stuff, then a bacon burger is perfect. It typically comes with a couple of slices of bacon and cheese inside.
- Vegetarian and vegan burgers: For vegetarians and vegans, there are good alternatives to the familiar ground beef patty. You can, for instance, get patties made of root vegetables or beans.
What types of buns are there?
The bun, along with the patty, plays a major role in the burger. If you want to serve burgers to your guests, you can earn extra points by making some airy, delicious buns for the burger. The bread, along with the filling, is one of the areas where you can be creative and give your burger a personal touch.
- Regular burger buns: In Denmark, the most common burger buns are white wheat bread with sesame seeds sprinkled on top.
- Brioche buns: The brioche bun is very similar to the regular burger bun, but it is made differently and typically has a lot more butter added. This makes these buns more airy and soft than the regular ones.
- Whole grain buns: The whole grain buns are usually made with rye flour instead of wheat flour and are thus a healthier alternative to the white buns and brioche buns.
What should be in a burger?
Besides the patty and the bun, there are several important ingredients that give the burger its delicious and crispy taste. It is very much about taste and preference, which makes the burger a favorite among many. You can easily swap some of the classic ingredients and thereby give your burger a different expression. Try, for instance, swapping the lettuce with chopped pointed cabbage or white cabbage, or add your own pickled onions to the burger.
The classic burger typically contains:
- Pickles
- Tomato
- A crispy lettuce
- Ketchup
- Burger dressing
- Bacon
- Cheese
- Onions
Why does everyone love burgers?
The burger is a flavor bomb of salt, sugar, and fat that goes straight to the heart and the stomach. It is, of course, not a dish one should indulge in every single day, but the burger hits all the right taste buds, which is why it is immensely popular.
Moreover, it is easy to make, easy to eat, and there is room for one to be creative when assembling the contents of their own burger. Try, for instance, putting many different items on the table so your guests or just your family can assemble their perfect burgers – a so-called build-your-own-burger.
