Why is ground beef steak so popular? It’s a good question, and there are many different answers to it. Maybe because it’s an easy dish to make, or because it tastes fantastic. Regardless, there is no doubt that ground beef steak is one of the most popular dishes in Denmark.

When was the ground beef steak invented?
It’s not entirely clear, but we know that the first recipe for ground beef steak was published in 1877. The recipe comes from a cookbook called “Food and Fashion,” written by the chef Christian Wilken.
In “Food and Fashion,” the ground beef steak is described as “ground beef, cooked in water along with onions, pepper, and salt.”
At that time, ground beef steak was a dish for the poor, but today it is one of the most popular dishes in Denmark.
What do you eat with ground beef steak?
There are many different ways to make ground beef steak, and therefore there are many different things you can eat with it.
The traditional accompaniments for a ground beef steak are soft (fried) onions, potatoes, a brown gravy, and salad.
But it’s entirely up to you what you want to eat with your ground beef steak.
For example, you can also make a ground beef steak with rice, couscous, or on bread as a Parisian steak.
No matter what you choose to eat with your ground beef steak, it’s a dish that’s easy to make and tastes fantastic. So if you haven’t tried ground beef steak before, it’s time to give it a shot. You won’t regret it.
How is a ground beef steak prepared?
Are you also crazy about a good, tasty ground beef steak? With this trick, you’ll get the perfect ground beef steak every time.
There are many options, but we use one simple method:
The ground beef is taken out 30 minutes before it is to be cooked. This allows it to be fried more easily, as a cold steak on a hot pan will result in all the juice coming out, and the steak thus being boiled—which is not desirable!
We always use a fat percentage between 8-12% to ensure that the meat is not too lean or fatty. This also means that we can avoid adding butter or oil for frying, which always takes place on a pan for us.
Depending on how many people there are, we use the following methods:
- 500 grams of ground beef is enough for 3 people. To ensure the steaks are of uniform size, the meat is divided into 4 pieces of 125 grams each, from which ground beef steaks are made.
- 400 grams of ground beef is enough for 2 people. To ensure the steaks are of uniform size, the meat is divided into 3 pieces of 133 grams each, from which ground beef steaks are made.
This ensures that they have a consistent size that suits this preparation method.

Ingredients
- 500 gram Ground Beef Use a fat percentage between 8-12. It’s better to use a higher fat percentage than a lower one
- Flake Salt
- Freshly ground pepper
Instructions
- Shape the patties into equally sized portions and make sure the sides are also even.
- Heat up a dry pan well and set it to one of the highest settings on the stove. In our case, it’s set to 12 out of 14 (induction) and previously we used to set it to 8 out of 9 (also induction).
- The fat from the meat is enough to ensure it doesn’t burn, while still giving it the flavorful fat and a nice seared surface. Dry-cook them for 5 minutes and then flip them. Simultaneously lower the heat to about half strength and give them another 5 minutes.
- When the meat is finished cooking, sprinkle sea salt and pepper over the meat and let it rest for 2 minutes under a clean kitchen towel.
- Then your hamburger patties are ready to serve.
