Turn on your toaster so it's nice and warm before you get started.
Start by making the dressing:
Mix mayo with mustard and thyme. Add freshly ground pepper and possibly season with a little salt. If your ham is very salty, be careful with the salt here.
If you are not using store-bought bread, it is important that your bread is as uniformly sliced in thickness as possible.
Start by spreading butter on one side of the bread. This should be the side that faces outwards to be toasted.
Spread some mayonnaise on 2 of the slices and spread it well.
Place a slice of cheddar on top.
Next, add a piece of ham and finally a cheese of your choice. It can also be cheddar.
Then place another slice of bread on top and put it in your toaster. Press it down with the lid and start it. When it lights green (after about 5 minutes), it is done. They should be golden and the cheese should be melted.
If you don't have a toast machine, you can put it in the oven at 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit) fan-forced. It takes about 8-12 minutes.
