Beer cake is the perfect autumn/winter cake and quite appropriate for Christmas. It is filled with many of the warming spices of Christmas, it is moist inside and has a caramelized surface... the whole house smells like Christmas when it's in the oven, and it tastes of childhood and winter memories...
Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius (347 degrees Fahrenheit) (fan).
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl with a hand mixer until you get a smooth batter.
Put the batter in a loaf pan lined with baking paper and bake for about 1 hour. Check by inserting a toothpick into the cake; if it comes out clean, the cake is done.
Can be served warm, but also tastes wonderful cooled and keeps delicious for 2-3 days.
