Thousand Island dressing is a true American classic! This dressing is probably the most well-known and versatile of them all.
There are numerous stories that describe the origin of the dressing, and regardless, we typically associate it with everything from classics like shrimp cocktail and open-faced sandwiches to burgers and fresh summer salads – a good, all-round dressing that is super easy to make yourself!
The oldest version of Thousand Island Dressing is from the book: “Epicurian” from the late 1800s. This recipe comes from Sophia LaLonde approximately 30-40 years later.

Ingredients
- 240 gram Mayonnaise see ingredients below
- 60 gram Ketchup Heinz
- 60 gram Pickles finely chopped
- 60 gram Onion finely chopped
- 0.8 gram Garlic Powder
- 0.5 gram Paprika
Homemade mayonnaise
- 1 pcs. Egg Yolk
- 5 gram Mustard
- 5 gram Vinegar
- 3 gram Salt
- 276 gram Oil neutral flavor
Instructions
Homemade mayonnaise
- Whisk together a mayonnaise. This can be done with the ingredients we've listed here, where it is made as a traditional mayonnaise or it can be blended with a whole egg. We have recipes for both methods on our website.
Thousand Island Dressing
- Finely chop onions and pickles.
- Weigh out 240 grams of mayonnaise and mix it with all the other ingredients.
