Recipe for teriyaki sauce

Teriyaki sauce is a classic flavor enhancer in Asian cuisine. It can, of course, be bought ready-made in the supermarket, but try making it yourself. It’s really easy, and the result is far better. The sauce is suitable as an accompaniment to many different types of meat and vegetables, but it’s also genius in marinades. The sugar ensures the slightly caramelized surface that is so delicious on grilled meat. For example, try our recipe for Asian spareribs next time the menu includes grilled food.

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Bowl
  • Canning Jar

Ingredients

  • 250 gram Water
  • 65 gram Brown sugar can be replaced with muscovado sugar
  • 50 gram Soya
  • 42 gram Honey
  • 1 clove Garlic finely chopped
  • 1 gram Ground ginger
  • 16 gram Cornstarch

Instructions

  • Pour water, brown sugar, soy sauce, honey, garlic, and ground ginger into a small pot.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil and let it cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes.
  • Dissolve cornstarch in a little cold water in a small bowl until you have a smooth mixture without lumps.
  • Pour the cornstarch mixture into the sauce and let it simmer until it reaches the desired consistency. It should have about the same consistency as liquid honey (the sauce will thicken a bit when it cools, so don't make it too thick). If it does, you can simply dilute it with a little water.
  • Cool the sauce and pour it into a cleaned bottle, jam jar, or similar.
  • The sauce can last a couple of weeks in the fridge.
