Recipe for toasted hotdog

Everyone loves a good hot dog, and for good reason! This little bite contains the perfect combination of soft, crispy, salty, sweet, and sour.

Today, we can buy fast food from street corners around the world, and most of us have quite an international food culture. Yet, pizza and shawarma have not managed to outcompete the hot dog, and although there are fewer of them, there are still hot dog stands in most Danish cities.

More and more people today care about the quality of the food they eat, and for many, quality of life and good taste are closely connected. One might argue that the hot dog doesn’t fit well into this idea because quality and good ingredients might not be the first things that come to mind when thinking about the offerings of a hot dog stand.

It’s a different story with the homemade hot dog. Here, you have the opportunity to use the best ingredients and elevate the hot dog to new taste heights. Homemade buns, meaty quality sausages, and a selection of crispy, fresh, and pickled toppings.

That’s Danish luxury fast food at its best!

Toasted hotdog

Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 pcs. Sausages Buy good quality with a high meat content
  • 8 pcs. Bread Preferably homemade sausage buns
  • Onion Toasted
  • Onion pickled, preferably homemade. Or just use raw, chopped onions
  • Cucumber Pickled, preferably homemade
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • remoulade - danish cold mayonnaise sauce with pickles

Instructions

  • Start by grilling your sausages. This is best done at relatively low heat over a long period of time. Avoid grilling at too high a temperature as the sausages will get charred and tend to crack.
  • The sausage buns are warmed in the oven, or give them a few minutes on the grill if you prefer.
  • Now you need to assemble your hotdog, which probably doesn't need much explanation: Place the sausage in the bun, add mustard, ketchup, and remoulade, and top it off with all the delicious things like toasted onions, pickled red onions, and pickled cucumbers.
  • Yum!
